The electric field $$E$$ between the electrodes (capacitor plates) and behind the electrodes. By definition, the electric field lines of the positively charged electrode point away from the electrode. And the field lines of the negatively charged electrode point towards the electrode. By interfering the two electric fields behind the plates, they cancel each other out. By interfering the two electric fields between the plates, they amplify.
