With the help of this principle setup of a system for molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), with which a substrate can be deposited with different materials coming out of the heated effusion cells.

The whole setup is in a very good vacuum in combination with an As (arsenic) atmosphere. The substrate is rotated to achieve the most homogeneous coating possible. And using a RHEED gun (electron gun), the layer growth is controlled in real time.
